Aligned with Broughton’s belief in realizing harm reduction, Principal Scientist, Frazer Lowe discusses a scientific paper that he co-authored on ‘Oxidative stress Leading to Decreased Lung Function' which discusses a new experimental model designed to replace the use of animals in nicotine research.
In collaboration with Phillip Morris International, British American Tobacco and PETA International Science Consortium, Broughton has co-developed three Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) which characterize key mechanisms by which oxidative stress (which can be caused by exposure to tobacco smoke) causes impaired mucociliary clearance in the lungs.
Along with our partners, Broughton is delighted to announce the publication of our manuscript entitled “An Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) for Decreased Lung Function Focusing on Mechanisms of Impaired Mucociliary Clearance (MCC) Following Inhalation Exposures”, which will be published shortly in Frontiers in Toxicology.
An AOP is a theoretical framework that describes a sequence of events and mechanisms by which substances, such as chemicals, can cause adverse human health effects. These frameworks can be used by scientists and regulators to predict adverse effects and protect human health using non-animal approaches. The information describing these AOPs can be found on the Adverse Outcome Pathway Wiki (https://aopwiki.org/aops/411, https://aopwiki.org/aops/424, https://aopwiki.org/aops/425), a publicly available knowledge base and online encyclopedia created by the European Commission's DG Joint Research Centre (JRC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
AOPs not only provide new approaches to toxicological assessment but also allow for more timely and cost-effective testing that does not rely on animal testing or long-term epidemiological studies.
